April 22, 1970 The first Earth Day is Made

Five months before the first April 22 Earth Day, on Sunday, November 30, 1969, The New York Times published an article by Gladwin Hill reporting on the rising events on the environmental.

On April 22, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy environment. The national coordinator, and his staff organized a massive coast-to-coast rallies. Many colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic things, pesticides, and the extinction of wildlife.

The Idea for Earth Day

gaylor nelson thought about taking care of the planet, so he thought that maybe ir could be an international day of the earth that means or invitates all the humans to take care of it, like a breath to the earth an sensibilize the humans of taking care the enviroment in which everybody breaths.
Nelson made a fundation to start the earth day and promoted it. He wrote letters to 50 governors and other cities asking them to issue Earth Day Proclamations. he made an article about the earth day and he sended many colleges newspapers explaining the event and also to one magazine that is named Scholastic Magazine, which went to most high schools.

In Earth Day ceremonies at the University of Wisconsin, Senator Nelson declared: Our goal is an environment of decency, quality, and mutual respect for all other human creatures and for all living creatures. . .The battle to restore a proper relationship between man and his environment, between man and other living creatures will require a long, sustained, political, moral, ethical, and financial commitment- -far beyond any effort made before."

Gaylord Nelson was an american democratic politician, he was the principal founder of Earth Day. In 1970 he called for congressional hearings of the safety of combined oral conceptive pills.
